In a surprising but welcome move, the Federal Trade Commission has reopened the Fortnite refund claim window, giving players in the U.S. another chance to seek reimbursement from Epic Games. This decision is part of the ongoing fallout from the 2022 settlement regarding misleading in-game purchases.
Eligible players now have until July 9, 2025, to file a claim — a major opportunity for those who missed out on the original deadline back in February.

The Story Behind the Settlement
Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, was accused of using design patterns known as "dark patterns" to trick players into making purchases they didn’t intend to. These included poorly placed buttons, confusing menus, and a lack of safeguards for preventing accidental purchases — especially by children.
In response, Epic agreed to a $520 million settlement with the FTC. Nearly half of that — $245 million — was reserved specifically for refunds to impacted players. The first wave of over 600,000 payments was sent out in late 2024. Now, after distributing nearly one million additional payments, the FTC has decided to reopen the application portal to ensure broader coverage.
