Recently, I got my hands on my first SCUF controller, the Reflex Pro for PS5. It was an exceptional experience, and despite the hefty price tag, it significantly boosted my performance. I was eager to see if the SCUF Instinct Pro Xbox controller would live up to that experience, and I’m happy to report that it did—and possibly exceeded my expectations.
Upon unboxing, I found the Instinct Pro, a six-foot braided USB-C cable, extra thumbsticks, and two AA batteries included. It’s a custom Xbox controller, and while I appreciate the inclusion of AA batteries, I would love to see SCUF release a version with a built-in rechargeable battery in the future. The long cable, a detail SCUF perfected with the Reflex Pro, is ideal for my wired gaming setup, though I did miss the carrying case that came with the Reflex Pro—especially given the controller’s premium price tag.
In terms of build, the Instinct Pro feels lightweight and comfortable, which is a great feature considering the Xbox Series controller was already designed with ergonomics in mind. The one I chose, the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 design, is just one of many customization options SCUF offers. A standout feature is the removable faceplate, which allows users to easily swap out parts without purchasing an entirely new controller. This added flexibility is a huge win in my book.
The layout is familiar to anyone who’s used an Xbox Series controller. The offset thumbsticks, D-pad, and face buttons will feel instantly recognizable. However, the addition of a mute button above the audio ports and an LED indicator for the controller’s three profiles adds a nice touch of convenience. SCUF has certainly thought about how players interact with the controller in-game, and the extras are well integrated into the overall design.
Comfort is a major selling point here. SCUF’s textured rubber grip is perfect for long gaming sessions, providing just the right amount of tactile feedback. This is crucial for me, as I tend to game for hours at a time, and the Instinct Pro’s grip ensures my hands never feel fatigued or uncomfortable.
As for the controller’s key features, it doesn’t disappoint. The thumbsticks are fully removable, much like the Reflex Pro, allowing for easy customization. While I still feel a bit of unease when swapping out the sticks, they come off and on with minimal hassle. The back buttons, though, are a different story. The Instinct Pro offers four back buttons, but I’m not completely sold on the design. Two of them sit in a natural grip position, while the other two face in the opposite direction, which means they don’t quite line up with my finger placement. I’ve adjusted my grip to make it work, but it’s not as intuitive as I’d hoped.
The trigger locks, on the other hand, are fantastic. Each trigger features a switch that lets you toggle between a full pull and a hair-trigger mode, which is ideal for competitive gaming. The instant trigger pull is incredibly responsive—so much so that my index fingers initially ached as I got used to the new sensitivity. There’s a satisfying click when you press the triggers, which gives a clear indication that your input has been registered.
After putting the Instinct Pro through its paces in various games, I’m impressed by its precision. Whether I’m landing headshots in Call of Duty, executing perfect passes in EA Sports College Football 25, or quickly scoping in a sniper rifle in Cyberpunk 2077, the controller feels like a natural extension of my hands. Despite the high price tag and the lack of major new features, the Instinct Pro offers a level of performance that’s hard to match.
The only real downside is the absence of software for digital input customization, a feature that I wish SCUF would add. While the physical tuning of the controller is intuitive, a more precise digital tuning option would allow for even greater customization. SCUF has made it easy to map out profiles manually, and while this works, I can’t help but imagine how much more powerful the controller could be with software support.
All in all, the SCUF Instinct Pro Xbox controller offers a top-tier gaming experience. It blends comfort, precision, and customization in a way that elevates your gameplay. If you’re willing to invest in a premium controller, it’s hard to find one that delivers a more satisfying experience than the Instinct Pro.
