Introducing Big Dill and The Brat, the two latest characters to join Fortnite’s new season, which kicked off this past weekend. Together, they form the hip-hop duo Tasty Bois and have already released their debut single, ‘Runamok,’ on SoundCloud.
The duo also has a music video on YouTube. While ‘Runamok’ isn’t available on other streaming platforms yet, Epic Games has created a dedicated ‘Big Dill’s Picks’ playlist on Spotify, packed with food-themed hip-hop tracks.
‘Runamok’ is also featured as a jam track in Fortnite’s Festival music mode. There’s a new addition that lets players choose one of these tracks to play when they parachute out of the Battle Bus or to celebrate a win.
While animated food characters rapping might not change the face of music, it certainly brings to mind some fun moments, like the famous Cookie Monster rap videos.
That said, it’s fascinating to see Fortnite using this platform to introduce virtual artists, a trend that’s becoming more common as Epic Games continues to collaborate with real-world musicians and rights holders.
Big Dill, one half of the Tasty Bois, is already available as a skin in Fortnite’s Battle Pass, allowing players to unlock and play as the character. His track will even play during matches, further cementing the connection between the in-game experience and the music.
Epic Games is clearly paying attention to what Riot Games has achieved with virtual bands in League of Legends—Pentakill, K/DA, True Damage, and Heartsteel. It’s possible that Fortnite could follow suit in developing more virtual artists.
While it’s still early days, and with only around 52k streams on SoundCloud five days after its debut, the true measure of success for the Tasty Bois will be player engagement within the game. That will likely shape how Epic Games expands this concept in the future.
